At Teagle Optometry – Promenade, Memorial Day is more than the unofficial beginning of summer. It is a day of remembrance, gratitude, and reflection.
Each year, Americans gather with family and friends, visit memorials, participate in parades, and take time to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. While many enjoy a long weekend, the true purpose of Memorial Day remains rooted in remembering the extraordinary sacrifices made for our freedoms.
A Brief History of Memorial Day
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, established in 1868, just three years after the Civil War ended. It began as a national day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers.
One of the earliest observances involved women who visited cemeteries to decorate the graves of fallen Confederate soldiers. Upon noticing neglected Union graves nearby, they chose to honor them as well. This act of compassion helped shape the spirit of Memorial Day into one of unity and remembrance.
Following World War I, the day expanded to honor those who died serving in all American wars, and in 1971 Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday, observed on the last Monday of May.
